Heaven knows what battles were going on in Pasternak’s mind and perhaps with the authorities too, for on a third page, dated September 3, came what Pasternak described as a “last note.”

Last Note. Please be welcome on the day and hour you dispose the best, except the intervals between 1—2½ and after 8 in the evening, when I can be absent on walks. The best hour remains that of the dinner (3 o’clock). Come as it were unawaitedly. Ask the guidance of the concert organization to provide for the return car. Agree with them upon my being admitted to you on the evening of the concert in the entr’acte.
